Massage Therapy Homecare – Amazing Castor Oil Packs

My first ever Castor Oil experience was a castor oil pack assigned by my naturopath. I was still a student, and the instructions to soak a flannel, store it between treatments and layer myself with plastic wrap and towels confused me. Luckily I’ve since perfected an easier way. Now castor oil packs are an important part of my homecare treatment plans for patients whose injuries are slow to heal. As with any homecare that I assign, I tailor instructions to each patient – if you’re curious about if a castor oil pack might help you, please book an appointment and we can work on a treatment plan that fit your needs.

As an RMT I assign castor oil packs for pain reduction and soft tissue health – NOT for overall wellness or to promote organ health. If you are concerned about your liver, please visit your ND (Naturopathic Doctor). Other practitioners may have a different system, these are my steps and precautions that I tailor to individual patients.

Goals

  • Long slow applications of heat help to reduce muscle tone and decrease spasms
  • Increasing the parasympathetic action may help increase gastrointestinal motility
  • Castor oil helps reduce the air barrier between you and the heat source, helping warm you up faster and for longer than with dry heat.
  • Heat helps with chronic pain and scarring

Technique

  • Apply castor oil packs 4-6 days in a row, give your body a few days off, and repeat as needed.

Abdominal:

  • Spread a thin layer of castor oil (sticky but not dripping) over your entire abdomen, from just above the belly button, and in wide clockwise circles to just above the pubic bone
  • Cover with an old t-shirt or towel that you don’t mind staining
  • Put on a hot water bottle, or heating pad and relax for 30-90 minutes

Muscle/Joint Pain

  • Apply a thin layer of castor oil (sticky but not dripping) over an area just a little larger than the painful area
  • Cover with an old t-shirt or towel that you don’t mind staining
  • Put on a hot water bottle, or heating pad and relax for 30-60 minutes

Caution

  • Don’t trust any website telling you that castor oil cures everything
  • Never ingest castor oil without a medical doctor’s instructions and supervision
  • Never apply castor oil on broken skin (cuts or scrapes)
  • Don’t apply heat on a new or inflamed injury

Use caution with heat over any piercings, metal pins or plates.
